Moving To Washington State

If you're moving to WA State, you have enough to do without worrying about getting your vehicle registered in our beautiful state. Puget Sound License Agency, Inc. is here to help. When you move to WA State, you have 30 days to register your vehicle once your vehicle gets to our State. After you register your vehicle, you will get Washington State license plates for that vehicle.You will need an unexpired WA State driver license in order to register your vehicle. Puget Sound Licensing Agency, Inc. DOES NOT provide Washington State driver licenses. Learn how to get your Washington State drivers license.

If you are moving to Washington State and you own your vehicle.

If you are moving to Washington State and you own your vehicle, you will need…

• The original title.

• Odometer disclosure for vehicles that are less than 10 yrs old.

• Emissions test for vehicles that are 2009 and newer. The vehicle must meet California emissions standards to register in Washington State. For more information, see Clean Car emission requirements. Vehicles in King, Pierce, Snohomish, Spokane & Clark counties are subject to emissions testing. If you have purchased vehicle less than 90 days you will need a Vehicle/Vessel Bill of Sale showing sales price OR Purchase order/agreement from dealer with proof of any taxes paid.

If your vehicle weight does not appear on your title and or registration you may be required to present a certified weight slip. Contact us at Puget Sound License Agency, Inc. for more information. If necessary visit any scale house in WA State.

 

 

If you are moving to Washington State and you are making payments on your vehicle.

If you are moving to Washington State and you are making payments on your vehicle, you will need…

• A copy of the front and back of title.

• Odometer disclosure for vehicles that are less than 10 yrs old.

• Emissions test for vehicles that are 2009 and newer. The vehicle must meet California emissions standards to register in Washington State. For more information, see Clean Car emission requirements. Vehicles in King, Pierce, Snohomish, Spokane & Clark counties are subject to emissions testing. If you have purchased vehicle less than 90 days you will need a Vehicle/Vessel Bill of Sale showing sales price OR Purchase order/agreement from dealer with proof of any taxes paid.

If you are moving to Washington State and you are leasing your vehicle.

If you are moving to Washington State and you are leasing your vehicle…

If your name (LSE) is printed on title with the Leasing Company (LSR), a copy of front and back of the title will be acceptable.

If your name (LSE) does not appear on the title, original title must be submitted.

• Lease agreement
• Lessors (LSR) tax id number
• Power of attorney to the LSE from LSR

• Odometer disclosure for vehicles that are less than 10 yrs old.

• Emissions test for vehicles that are 2009 and newer. The vehicle must meet California emissions standards to register in Washington State. For more information, see Clean Car emission requirements. Vehicles in King, Pierce, Snohomish, Spokane & Clark counties are subject to emissions testing. If you are moving to Washington State and your vehicle was given to you.

If you are moving to Washington State and your vehicle was given to you, you will need to…

• Provide proof sales tax has been paid from the person gifting you the vehicle or vessel.

• If vehicle has been owned for 7 years or more and is from a state or province with sales tax, it will be assumed that tax was paid, no use tax it due.

• Odometer disclosure for vehicles that are less than 10 yrs old.

• Emissions test for vehicles that are 2009 and newer. The vehicle must meet California emissions standards to register in Washington State. For more information, see Clean Car emission requirements. Vehicles in King, Pierce, Snohomish, Spokane & Clark counties are subject to emissions testing. If you have purchased vehicle less than 90 days you will need a Vehicle/Vessel Bill of Sale showing sales price OR Purchase order/agreement from dealer with proof of any taxes paid.

Ensure that your vehicle meets all of the special requirements that apply.
Bring yourself, your valid Washington State driver license and the following items to our location.

A Vehicle Certificate of Ownership (title) Application

• All registered owners must present their unexpired Washington State driver licenses.

• You may fill out most of the forms in advance or in our office, but the registered owners must sign the form in our office so our agent can certify the signatures.

Out of State Title

• Submit a copy of the front and back of the out-of-state title if you are still making payments on the vehicle.

• Don't have the out-of-state title? You must have the title from the state that the vehicle is registered in. There are no substitute documents that can be used.

• All applicable fees. Contact the WA State Department of Licensing at (360) 902-3770 to find out the fees for your vehicle. Fees depend on factors such as the weight of your vehicle, where you live, and the kind of license plates you want. Puget Sound License Agency, Inc. accepts cash, check, money order and certain credit cards.

Special Requirements

1. If you are registering a vehicle that is less than 10 years old, you must submit an Odometer Disclosure Statement with your application. We have the necessary form in our office. The Odometer Disclosure Statement form is printed on tamperproof paper and cannot be downloaded from our site, emailed to you or faxed. Feel free to contact us to have it mailed to you.

2. If you are registering a car, light duty truck, sport utility vehicle (SUV), passenger van, the vehicle must meet California emission standards to be registered, leased, rented, licensed or sold for use in Washington State. See Clean Car emission requirements for more information.

3. If you are registering a vehicle in Clark, King, Pierce, Snohomish or Spokane Counties, your vehicle may have to pass an emissions test before it can be registered in Washington State. Visit Emissions Testing for more information.

4. If you are registering a trailer, recreational vehicle (RV), or motor home, you might be required to show proof of having paid sales tax when you bought the vehicle. If you do not have proof, you will be required to pay use tax.

5. If you are registering a vehicle that has been registered in another state AND owned for fewer than 90 days, you must also include the vehicle bill of sale showing the price of the vehicle or a purchase agreement from the dealership with proof of any taxes paid.

6. If you are registering a vehicle where the vehicle weight is not on the out-of-state title, you may be required to present a vehicle weight slip. You may weigh your vehicle at any scale house in Washington State.

7. If you are registering a vehicle where any owners listed on the out-of-state title are deceased or need to be removed because of divorce or other reasons, contact the WA State Department of Licensing at (360) 902-3770 for specific instructions.
